LED — colour rendering

Author: PannonLighting

The colour rendering index (CRI, or Ra) is an important quality criterion when assessing LED luminaires.

Different luminaires have characteristic colour rendering properties. This means that coloured surfaces produce a different colour impression when lit by two white light sources that otherwise appear identical. Ripe strawberries may look appetising in the midday sun, for instance, while under fluorescent light the “succulent” quality of their red fades considerably.

This is due to the colour spectrum of the individual light sources and the combination of wavelengths they contain. The resulting differences in reflection produce a different colour impression. The lower the Ra value, the less natural the appearance of the colour.

Daylight has maximum colour rendering, denoted by a value of Ra 100. In interiors such as offices and workshops, lighting with a colour rendering index of at least Ra 80 is recommended for efficient work and comfortable visual conditions. This means that 80% of the visible colour spectrum can be reproduced by the LEDs. With the right colour rendering, light level and colour temperature, goods can be presented in the most attractive way possible to the eye.

If meat products are to be displayed, for example, a greater proportion of red is needed to emphasise freshness.

LED colour rendering

This is why it is important to determine the required lighting effect as early as the design phase, so that the most suitable luminaire can be used in every case.
