LED — functional characteristics
LEDs are light-emitting diodes built from thin semiconductor chips that convert considerably more energy into light than conventional incandescent lamps.
In short, the diode converts direct current into light, which takes very little energy. It is this high luminous efficacy, coupled with an exceptionally long service life, that makes the LED “the light source of the future” from both an economic and an ecological point of view. Depending on the semiconductor material used, LED light sources can produce a range of lighting effects from blue through green to red.
There are two ways of obtaining white light:
By light conversion, in which a very thin phosphor coating is deposited over a chip emitting blue light. The phosphor converts part of the blue component into yellow, thereby producing white light. Alternatively, the same effect can be achieved by mixing the light of red, green and blue LEDs.
A good colour rendering index, however, can only be achieved with a phosphor-coated light-emitting diode.
With LED technology the colour spectrum, the colour temperature and the colour rendering can all be chosen freely, which makes the use of LEDs highly flexible and adaptable in any application.
