LEDs have very high luminous efficacy and strike an effective balance between energy use and performance. With minimal power consumption they produce more light than comparable luminaires using conventional light sources.
Luminous efficacy (lm/W) indicates how much electrical power, measured in watts, a light source converts into light, measured in lumens. Conventional halogen lamps have a luminous efficacy of at most 30 lm/W, fluorescent tubes 60–110 lm/W, while LEDs can now reach as much as 130–150 lm/W.
The development work currently under way in this field will give LEDs even higher luminous efficacy, whereas with conventional light sources there is barely any scope left for improvement.

The diagram shows average values for the various light sources.
