Energy-efficient LED hall lighting with intelligent sensors…

What opportunities does lighting modernisation offer for industrial facilities?

There are already many ways of lighting warehouse halls, but one of the most effective solutions — alongside proper lighting design, of course — is to use LED high-bay luminaires fitted with the right optics.

LED high-bay luminaires can be used not only in warehouses but in any facility or location with a ceiling height of at least 6 metres. That is the height at which it becomes worth carrying out the lighting modernisation with LED high-bay luminaires, since at that height dust- and moisture-proof or other conventional fittings light the space far less efficiently.

Besides warehouse halls, LED high-bay luminaires are also an excellent solution for modernising the lighting of sports halls, gymnasiums, loading docks, logistics centres and other industrial facilities.

Hall lighting can mean several different things…

In halls where sporting events are held and video is recorded or broadcast live, it is worth using LED high-bay luminaires with the specially developed low-glare diffuser (anti-glare, UGR<19).

In high-bay warehouses fitted with racking systems, LED high-bay luminaires with rack optics are recommended, so that labels are easier to read during materials handling and the risk of accidents or damage to stock is reduced.

Why is LED high-bay lighting a better choice than the alternatives, such as fluorescent or compact fluorescent fittings?

1. Energy efficiency is one of the key considerations in hall lighting too

With energy prices having risen many times over and become unpredictable, energy efficiency has arguably become the most important consideration of all. One of the great advantages of LED hall lighting over other types is precisely its cost-effectiveness. Specifically, these LED high-bay luminaires consume less energy than other lighting solutions, and it is not unusual for facilities to save as much as 80% on their electricity bills. If the system is combined with intelligent sensors, consumption can be reduced further still and the LED high-bay luminaires operated even more efficiently.

If the owner or operator wants to get the maximum efficiency out of the lighting modernisation and there is relatively little movement in the facility, LED high-bay luminaires with sensors may be worth considering.

Cost savings, however, are only one of the great benefits of modernising hall lighting — there are many others.

2. Long-life hall lighting that does not heat up

hall lighting

LED high-bay luminaires with proper aluminium heat sinks last up to ten times longer than compact fluorescent or fluorescent fittings, and they give off no heat when switched on.

This is not only a safety advantage over other types of luminaire: because they generate no heat, they also save on cooling costs. Indeed, it is estimated that facilities can save as much as 20% on their utility bills, since high-output LED high-bay luminaires reduce the need for air conditioning.

3. Durability and visual benefits in hall lighting

We have already mentioned that LED high-bay luminaires have a long service life (50,000–100,000 operating hours), so there is certainly no need to worry about maintenance for many years — which simplifies operation and the maintenance costs that go with it. When making a selection, it is important to choose a product with at least a five-year manufacturer's warranty.

LED high-bay luminaires are also gentler on the eyes. Switch on a fluorescent or compact fluorescent lamp and it will certainly flicker — at least for a while. Switch on a good quality, high-output LED high-bay luminaire and you will see that it reaches 100% of its luminous flux instantly, with no warm-up or ignition time. What is more, you can switch it on and off as often as you like without causing problems or flicker. This is precisely why an LED high-bay luminaire copes well with being switched and regulated by connected light or motion sensors, unlike compact fluorescent and fluorescent fittings.

4. Better uniformity in hall lighting

With the right optics and good design, LED high-bay luminaires provide better light distribution than their conventional counterparts. LED high-bay luminaires mounted at the right height can deliver up to 8% better light distribution and higher uniformity than old fluorescent fittings.

Further advantages of LED high-bay luminaires over fluorescent and compact fluorescent lamps are less light distortion and minimal static build-up. (Static build-up is the phenomenon whereby electrical charges are exchanged between the surfaces of two objects in contact with each other. In this process one object takes on a positive and the other a negative charge, and static electricity accumulates on the surfaces of the objects.)

Until now, one of the biggest obstacles to installing LED high-bay lighting has been the very high initial capital cost.

However, taking into account today's greatly increased industrial electricity prices, the energy efficiency of LED high-bay luminaires and their long service life (50,000–100,000 operating hours), it is certainly worth considering a lighting modernisation as soon as possible, because the payback will be very rapid — potentially within one to two years.

And if we also take into account that state support is currently available for energy efficiency investments — which lighting modernisation counts as — the return can be over 80%.
