Emergency Lighting
In a power cut every electrical device stops working. It goes dark — above all in those places where no light filters in from outside. The situation can quickly become alarming, particularly if there is dangerous machinery nearby. A power cut not only halts work in automated plants; in the darkness that follows it also makes it hard to find the way to the exits. If the lighting fails while we are working, orientation suddenly becomes very difficult, and stress makes the problem worse. In such a situation panic breaking out and the number of accidents rising is more than likely. This can be avoided by installing an appropriate standby lighting system. It makes orientation possible and keeps the working environment safe: on the way to the exit we will not collide with dangerous machines, knock them over or damage them, and there is no risk of falling down stairs. Along a route marked by signs that stay lit when needed, the area can be left safely and as quickly as possible.
An emergency lighting system includes the luminaires that illuminate the escape route where no natural light source is available in the room, as well as the escape route signs themselves, which light the way to the emergency exit. These are governed by a strict standard (EN 1838), which sets out how the emergency lighting system must be designed and what must be taken into account:
- distance from floor level
- adequate illumination of the escape route
- the emergency exit must be illuminated and signed
- changes of level at stairs must be made visible
- every junction and corridor along the escape route must have an emergency luminaire with the appropriate directional marking
- emergency lighting must be provided at every first-aid station and fire extinguisher
